Tesco is to stop sourcing products from Zimbabwe after the re-election of President Robert Mugabe.

Tesco, which buys about£1 million worth of goods – including vegetables – from Zimbabwe, said it will look at other ways to support workers in the country.

The move comes a day after a Foreign Office minister urged companies trading with Zimbabwe to “look carefully” at their investments.

In a statement, Tesco said: “We cannot ignore the escalating political crisis in Zimbabwe and the growing consensus in the international community – including from UK politicians on all sides – that further action must be taken to maximise the pressure for change.”
