Tesco plans to sell £400 million of local products in UK stores this year.

Speaking at the National Farmers Union conference in London yesterday, Tesco corporate and legal affairs director Lucy Neville-Rolfe said the push followed demands from customers for fresh products, which contributed to the local economy.

She also revealed Tesco’s wider plans to deliver sales of£1 billion for locally sourced products by 2011. “By 2011, we plan to sell one billion pounds worth. That target is perfectly achievable," she said.

Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy was due to address the conference but was injured in a skiing accident last week.
"He is on the mend, but not yet back at work," Neville-Rolfe said.
