Tesco reveals One Stop store opening plan

Tesco is to kick-start a One Stop store opening programme next year to complement its Express chain in the convenience market.

One Stop was the main trading fascia of T&S Stores, acquired by Tesco last year. About half of the 870-strong chain is being converted to Express, but there is growth potential at One Stop too.

One Stop offers a different customer proposition to Express. Shoppers tend to use Express for fresh food, while One Stop majors in purchases such as a pint of milk or a four-pack of beer.

Speaking at last week's Insight and SRCG Convenience Retail conference, T&S Stores chief executive Colin Holmes said: 'We have a strong opening programme in the pipeline for One Stop.' He refused to specify numbers.

Holmes said that One Stop has a long heritage in convenience and that the business is being strengthened by learning from Tesco.

He added that Tesco has converted 70 One Stop stores to Express so far, and average sales uplifts are about 90 per cent.
