UK leader continues to break records
Tesco continued to gobble up market share in the grocery market in the four weeks to August 14, according to TNS. The analyst said the UK's leading retailer now has 30.5 per cent of the market, up from 30.4 in the previous four-week period.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury's has held on to its hard-won gains on second place Asda, which in turn has managed to shore up the losses made in recent months.

TNS Superpanel communications director Edward Garner noted that Morrisons' share has declined again, as Safeway stores are sold. However, he said: 'The store conversion programme should be completed by the year-end, by which time Safeway will cease to exist and we should have a clearer measure of the final size of the Morrisons operation.'

Somerfield's store conversions from Kwik Save to Somerfield are reflected in the growth of share for the eponymous fascia, combined with the decline of Kwik Save. However, the aggregate share for the group has grown from 5.7 per cent to 5.9 per cent year on year.
