Welsh farmers call for legislation as retailers see share of revenues rocket
Supermarkets have come under fire from Welsh dairy farmers today for making obscene profits on milk.

According to a report from the Milk Development Council, Supermarkets have increased their profit on the price of a pint from 3 per cent to 28 per cent since 1995. Welsh milk suppliers, on the other hand, have seen their share of revenues decrease from 58 per cent to 39 per cent, with many failing to make a profit at all, according to the Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW).

The union argued that milk processors' share had also declined slightly, leaving supermarkets as the only ones to increase profits in the consumption of milk.

FUW milk committee chairman Eifion Huws said: 'These figures prove conclusively that the sheer greed of the supermarket giants has led to a massive increase in their profits at the expense of dairy farmers. The obscene quest of the supermarkets to make profits at any cost has left one in five Welsh dairy farmers earning a paltry£5,000 a year. Forget the supermarkets' buying power, we are talking about their bullying power when it comes to dealing with dairy farmers.'

The union called for legislation forcing retailers to give milk producers a fairer share of revenues.
