Hammerson has launched the marketing campaign for its newest central London retail scheme, at Bishop's Square in Spitalfields, London.

The controversial redevelopment of part of the former Spitalfields market is now nearing completion, with 750,000 sq ft (69,675 sq m) of offices pre-let to international law form Allen & Overy. Beneath the offices, a new retail district is taking shape.

The scheme will provide 45,000 sq ft (4,180 sq m) of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars in 21 units. Historic buildings along Brushfield Street are being restored to provide units both facing onto Brushfield Street and into the existing stall market.

Hammerson director of retail leasing Sheila King said the marketing will focus on attracting an appropriate tenant mix that adds to the unique character of the local retail offer.

Letting agents CB Richard Ellis and EA Shaw have been briefed to find retailers that reflect the 'edgy' feel of Spitalfields, which has an intriguing variety of speciality shops and local businesses, and will appeal to the local community, the local workforce and visitors to the area.

The developers have been keen to ensure the vitality of the existing market, which was retained after a campaign by local lobby groups. There will be a covered glass canopy between the Bishops Square building and the market to integrate the scheme fully into the existing retail/leisure offer.

The scheme is scheduled for completion next spring.
