Iconic department store retailer Selfridges has unveiled the theme for its centenary celebrations in 2009.

Selfridges will use the theme “Open to the World Since 1909” to kick off the series of celebrations in 2009, which will begin in early May and continue throughout the summer.

The words are taken from an advertisement placed by Selfridges founder Harry Gordon Selfridge on the retailer’s opening day on March 15, 1909.

The retailer was run by Selfridge until 1940 and bought by Charles Clore’s British Shoe Corporation – which became the Sears Group – in 1965.

It was demerged from Sears in 1998 and floated on the London Stock Exchange before being bought in 2003 by Galen Weston, who is the retailer’s current chairman.

Creative director Alannah Weston said: “This is a landmark birthday and we’re planning all sorts of excitements. We will honour our heritage, celebrate the present and look to the future with events and experiences to inspire and captivate.”
