Asda's share remains flat
Sainsbury's has narrowed the gap with Asda in the battle for the number-two supermarket slot, according to figures from TNS.

Sainsbury's share has increased to 16 per cent for the 12 weeks to August 13 - up from 15.7 per cent last year. Meanwhile, Asda's share stayed flat at 16.6 per cent for the period.

Tesco has continued to power away at the top of the grocery league, with its share up to 31.6 per cent from 30.3 per.

Somerfield also recorded solid growth, up to 4.4 per cent from 4.2 per cent, while it rebranded the Kwik Save stores that it did not offload through the sale of the discount retailer in February.

Waitrose continued to improve, with its share up 0.2 percentage points to 3.8 per cent. Discounters Lidl and Aldi were also risers, with their market shares up 0.1 percentage points and 0.2 percentage points respectively, to 2.1 per cent and 2.5 per cent.
