Richleys gears up for more stores after fightback against bigger rivals

Richleys, the South Wales and west of England value clothing and footwear group, said it mounted a strong fightback against bigger retailers during the past year.

For the six months to January 17, like-for-like sales were up 7 per cent. For the most recent four weeks to that date, like-for-likes climbed 22 per cent.

Managing director Geoff Richards said: 'We have put in a good performance, and we haven't suffered in margin either, which is up one percentage point on the year.'

The chain has focused on out-of-town units since it sold its 29-strong high street chain two years ago. Richleys has 13 outlets, following the disposal of two during the past year.

'We reinvested the cash from the high street disposal into systems. We are in a strong cash position at the moment and have the facility to open more stores,' said Richards.

Three properties are under consideration, but only one is expected to be completed.
