Retail Week Interiors - Product is key, JLP chief tells BCSC delegates

Product beats retail experience, according to John Lewis Partnership managing director Luke Mayhew.

Speaking at the BCSC conference, he said: 'It's as if retail theatre is the only way to do retailing. What makes for great retail is great product and great experience. If I had to choose between product and experience, I'd choose product.'

He also commented on in-store music, saying that JLP customers didn't like it. 'The experience has to fit, but is not the key driver of success,' he said.

Mayhew spoke to Retail Week about the performance of JLP's Touchwood store, following the opening of the Bullring. 'I'm very happy with Solihull and I'm very happy that Birmingham has happened. Solihull has slowed down on the fashion side a bit, but it's still growing.'
