Retail Property - Wandsworth centre revamp starts to pay off

Redevelopment of Southside, the former Arndale Centre in Wandsworth, south London, is beginning to pay dividends.

With only parts of the centre's£100 million makeover complete, footfall has already risen 40 per cent, to 100,000 visitors a week. Work on the scheme, carried out by Portfolio Holdings, Deutsche Bank and Apollo Real Estate, is not due to be finished until next spring.

Primark and Waitrose have been secured to anchor the redeveloped scheme.

Retailers including Dorothy Perkins, Burtons, Clarks and Game have taken units along the centre's South and Central Malls, where rents are now£115 per sq ft (1,237 per sq m) Zone A.

Letting agents Angermann Goddard & Loyd and Cushman & Wakefield Healey & Baker have now switched their attention to securing tenants for a dozen smaller units on Southside's North Mall, where Zone A rents are£55 per sq ft (£592 per sq m).
