Drastic reduction in traffic
Westminster City Council has unveiled a£40 million draft plan to transform the West End - including plans to reduce traffic and congestion, a series of oases for al fresco dining and enlarged pedestrianised areas for public art and performances.

The Oxford, Bond and Regent St (ORB) Draft Action Plan also highlights areas at the eastern end of Oxford Street that are in much need of re-development.

Westminster City Council leader Sir Simon Milton said: 'Our proposals are a realistic vision for change. We are happy to lead, but everyone needs to do their bit. Given the importance of the area we need all our partners, the private sector and central Government to follow through and make sure the West End is world class for the Olympics and beyond.'

At the New West End Company's environment summit last week, Milton said that the aim is to reduce buses on Oxford Street by 10 per cent year on year.

New West End Company chief executive Gary Reeves said: 'Doing nothing is not an option; shoppers and businesses have called for change; the public and private sector must now all work in partnership to make these aspirations a reality.'

Westminster City Council, the New West End Company and Transport for London (TFL) have committed£12million to the project already, which is being put out to public consultation for 12 weeks.
