Takeaway platform Just Eat is set to slash 1,870 jobs in the UK following a slump in sales post-lockdown.

The firm will no longer employ its own delivery couriers, which could result in 1,700 job losses, with a further 170 operational roles being cut.

The news comes after the company’s financial results, which included a 9% decline in customer numbers last year as the demand for takeaway softened as the pandemic retreated.

Drivers and riders have been given six weeks’ notice.

A Just Eat spokesperson said the aim of the restructure was to improve efficiency and the company will use entirely gig economy workers instead of a mix of employees and self-employed workers.

They said: “As part of this process, we have proposed to transition away from the worker model for couriers, which is a small part of our overall delivery operations, running in certain parts of six UK cities.”

The job cuts are said to have no impact on its services.

Rival Deliveroo announced last month that it would be cutting hundreds of jobs as it was a “necessary response to overhiring during the pandemic”.
