Sales volume growth has slowed over the past three months as the household sector reported the largest fall in sales volumes for three years.

Sales volume growth in the three months from February to April was 1.5 per cent, down from 1.9 per cent in the three months to March.

Food stores reported a 1 per cent sales growth for the three-month period and non-food shops were up 1.7 per cent.

Sales volume growth in household goods, however, slumped 1.9 per cent – the largest fall in the sector since May 2005.

Sales in games stores, mobile phone stores and sports stores rose 5.3 per cent, which is the largest growth in this sector since records began in 1986.

Total year-on-year sales volumes over the three month period to April were up 4.8 per cent, with sales for food retailers ahead 2.2 per cent. Non-food stores sales volumes rose 5.4 per cent.

Between March and April sales volumes fell 0.2 per cent. Food retailers experienced a 1 per cent slide, while non-food retailers sales volumes grew by 0.2 per cent.
