O2 to sell 30 stores in consolidation push

Mobile phone operator O2 has launched a marketing push to get rid of 30 of its UK stores that have become surplus to requirements.

Churston Heard has won the contract to dispose of the stores, replacing the three agents that previously shared the instruction contract.

The stores are located in cities including Hull, York, Manchester, London, Coventry and Southampton.

The outlets being disposed of range in size from 300 sq ft (28 sq m) kiosks to full-size 2,500 sq ft (230 sq m) units.

Churston Heard director Damian Sumner denied the move reflected a downturn in handset sales, but said it was part of a wider consolidation exercise.

'Most of the properties are duplicate stores in towns where O2 found itself with two units, following the acquisition of the Mobile Phone Store, BT and DX Communications,' said Sumner.

O2 is still expanding, with plans to secure a further 100 sites. The move would bring the retailer's portfolio up to about 300 stores by next year.
