O2 plots future with expansion back on agenda

Mobile phone retailer O2, previously BT Cellnet, is considering store openings again.

Expansion is being pondered following consolidation of the retailer's portfolio before the O2 concept was launched in May.

The O2 launch united five brands that the retailer had either acquired or experimented with. They included DX Communications, Mobile Phone Store, BT, Pay and Go and Nokia. Store consolidation and duplication rid the retailer of more than 100 sites.

Sales and retail director Mark Stansfield said the retailer could expand again from its existing 196-store base to between 250 and 300 shops. 'We recognise the opportunity for more stores,' he said.

O2 is developing experience-based stores. Repair centres, in four shops at present, will go into 20 stores by Christmas. A business concept, piloted in London and Liverpool, will be rolled out to key locations by the spring.
