Mothercare tests store formats to prepare for refit

Mothercare plans a refit and product review across its stores early next year, after results from trials of its Mother & Baby and Mothercare Lite trading formats become available.

Findings should be available in the autumn. The retailer is trying to determine which ranges and store designs work best as it bids for recovery.

The turnaround plan has already led to the closure of 13 unprofitable shops and reaped 3.4 per cent like-for-like sales growth for the first 15 weeks of the financial year.

At last week's AGM it was also revealed that gross margin was up by five percentage points, although chief executive Ben Gordon emphasised that the growth was against poor performance the previous year. Summer Sale markdowns are expected to reduce the figure to 4 percentage points.
