Matalan moots high street sites

Discount clothing retailer Matalan is considering opening in more high street shopping centres 'in major cities'.

The option is being explored following the opening of Matalan's first town centre shopping mall store in Southampton's Marlands scheme late last year.

Head of estates Graham Seaton said the tactic is part of a flexible approach to the acquisition of sites. He said: 'The Southampton model will be looked at for major cities only. We are not moving away from our current requirements.'

Seaton said Matalan will continue to seek low rents and has always been 'relatively opportunistic' in its opening programme. He added: 'We've had units on the edge of town for a long time now.'

Matalan now has more than 150 stores and is looking for sites of up to 5,575 sq m.
