GUS plans 30-store Homebase advance

Retail giant GUS is planning to open 30 Homebase stores over the next three years and is investing in retraining the DIY chain's 17,000 staff.

GUS is also testing new ranges in 273-store-strong Homebase and is attempting to maximise synergies with Argos.

Homebase, acquired for£900 million last year, launched a new home furnishings range, miHome, in September in 10 stores.

The range is likely to be rolled out in new and refurbished stores next year. Argos Retail Group chief executive Terry Duddy said there is much work to do at Homebase to improve stock availability and in-store standards.

He said synergies were already coming through. He added: 'Argos and Homebase have been working together on joint procurement. Homebase is now buying from Hong Kong (like Argos). That will deliver£5 million savings in the current year.'

GUS posted a 44 per cent increase in interim profit before amortisation, goodwill, exceptional items and taxation of£354 million. Group sales increased by 24 per cent to£3.7 billion.
