Tesco has put thousands of store-manager roles into consultation as it launches a major shake-up of its larger stores.

The UK’s largest supermarket is making changes to the way it staffs its larger superstores and Extra stores, and will scrap thousands of management roles in the process, according to The Grocer.

Affected departments include checkout, fresh food and F&F with department managers set to be replaced with team or lead manager positions.

Tesco insisted there would be no redundancies as a result of the shake-up and said the new roles would give staff more responsibility for different parts of the store.

A Tesco spokeswoman said: “The way our customers shop with us is changing and so is the way we need to manage our stores.

“We are making some changes to our store management structures to ensure that our stores are set up to best serve our customers and support our colleagues. All managers will be offered alternative management roles.”

It is the first staff restructuring under new boss Ken Murphy and follows restructuring announcements by competitors Asda and Sainsbury’s.

Last month, Asda revealed it was putting 5,000 jobs at risk as part of a restructuring to better focus the business on online grocery.

Then last week Sainsbury’s said it would be slashing 500 head-office roles and putting a further 650 into consultation by closing one of its distribution centres as the retailer looks to cut costs and better focus on its food-first strategy.
