C-store specialist the Co-op has announced the launch of a new chain of ‘On the Go’ micro stores, which are around a quarter of the size of its usual convenience stores.

The retailer said that the new format stores will have new operating hours and a dedicated range that serves “the demand for the growing ‘grab-and-go’ consumer culture”.
Retail Week understands the new concept stores will be between 600 sq ft and 1,000 sq ft, will be open between 7am and 7pm daily and will be specifically targeted in high foot-traffic, urban locations.
The first of the new ‘on-the-go’ formats opens today in Solihull, with plans to open a further 15 over the coming months.
Co-op said it had a long-term ambition of opening several hundred of the new format stores in the next two to three years.
The new stores will feature Co-op’s first “serve-over counters”, which the retailer said will offer a “more personal and brand-focused customer experience” and menus that “change throughout the day” – covering breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The formats will also feature Costa Coffee stands, and the retailer has drawn inspiration from “the best of European and Far East trends” to “meet consumer demand for fast, high-quality food on the go”.
Products available exclusively in the new format include: breakfast boxes, hot porridge, freshly made breakfast sandwiches, hot toasties and baguettes and chicken tender pieces.
Co-op food boss Matt Hood said: “We are always looking at new ways to deliver convenience to our members and customers and these new stores are a perfect example of us using our expertise to refine our ‘on the go’ offer so it is focused on giving shoppers exactly what they need, when they need it.
“It’s a brand-new concept, which we believe there is a big demand for and which we can meet with delicious products, quick service, good value and spot on locations. I’m excited to see this evolution of Co-op stores join our traditional convenience stores across the UK.”
