Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct is reportedly in talks to acquire up to 200 stores from the collapsed US retail chain Sports Authority.

The UK retailer has teamed up with US firm Modell’s Sporting Goods over a potential deal to buy the Sports Authority stores, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Sports Authority, which has 450 stores, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in March and is expected to wrap up its liquidation by the end of next month.

Bids for Sports Authority store leases are reportedly due by Thursday.

The move would see Mike Ashley upping his US interests after Sports Direct acquired stakes in US firms Iconix and Dick’s Sporting Goods in January.

In the UK, Ashley has so far failed in his attempts to acquire collapsed department store chain BHS. However he is reportedly still trying to acquire 80 of the stores and the BHS brand name.
