Matalan has shared an update on the first phase of its store refurbishment programme as it makes progress on its business transformation.
The fashion retailer revealed the recently refurbished stores have seen a rise in footfall since reopening, with these stores’ sales currently outperforming the wider estate by 14%.
Sales are up 20% on the same period last year in locations such as Rhyl, Hull and Wrexham, with customer satisfaction scores also improving.
Matalan now plans to upgrade a total of 40 stores, 10 more than initially planned.
The revamped stores will feature simplified layouts, better signage, brighter interiors with LED lighting and expanded visual merchandising, and key in-store services such as fitting rooms and tills relocated to more accessible areas.
It is also investing in car parks with new signage and improved lighting to increase visibility on retail parks.
New concession partnerships will feature in many of the upgraded stores, including womenswear brands Quiz, Blue Vanilla and Little Mistress, with more to come.
Early next year, Matalan plans to roll out new self-service tills with improved software for faster transactions and self-serve click-and-collect.
The upgrades form part of a £25m investment to modernise the full estate in the next three to five years.
Matalan chief retail officer Katherine Davis said: “Whether it’s brighter interiors, faster tills or a nicer experience parking your car, we’re listening and investing in what matters most to our customers. The results speak for themselves – higher footfall, happier shoppers and even more compelling reasons to visit your local Matalan.
“This all ladders up to delivering a better experience for our customers – as well as our colleagues on the shop floor – and winning market share, which is central to our ambitious business transformation.”
