EWM to explore potential for overseas push

Edinburgh Woollen Mill aims to launch an international business in a bid to capitalise on the tourist appeal of its products in countries such as Japan, Korea and the US.

Chief executive Philip Day said the potential will be investigated next year. 'There is opportunity for us to develop our business outside of the UK. There's a huge demand for the type of product offer we have in our tourist stores in places like that,' he explained.

Day said an international drive will most likely involve licensing deals.

Target store numbers have not yet been decided.

In the UK, Day plans up to 50 new shops over the next three years. The retailer also intends to launch a concessions business in traditional department stores that already carry the types of brands that appeal to Edinburgh Woollen Mill customers.

A concessions director will be recruited to head the drive. The retailer already has concessions in Wyevale Garden Centres.
