European deals drive up Dixons' overseas sales

International business at electricals giant Dixons now accounts for 20 per cent of group sales.

Acquisitions, such as that of Italian chain UniEuro, and increasing profitability at chains such as Scandinavian business Elkjop, drove the increased international contribution, which stood at approximately 10 per cent a year ago.

However, Dixons also posted a 5 per cent fall in UK retail operating profit to£240.3 million at Wednesday's prelims.

Finance director Jeremy Darroch said that a focus on cost reduction, improved in-store services and range alterations had helped following a disappointing Christmas.

Dixons' pre-tax profit of£301.3 million, excluding exceptionals and goodwill amortisation, was up 1 per cent. Sales rose 18 per cent to£5.8 billion.
