London’s West End is set to benefit from the Crossrail project, which was given the go-ahead last week.

The railway link, stretching from east London to Heathrow airport, will include a station at Tottenham Court Road. The proposed site will take out many of the shabby, temporary-let shops at Oxford Street’s east end.

CBRE director of retail research Mark Teale said: “West End retailers will benefit significantly from Crossrail, because shoppers will find it quicker and easier to get to the main shopping areas along Oxford Street, Bond Street and Regent Street.

“Our research on future shopping patterns in London shows that Crossrail will help to offset the impact of the Congestion Charge and ultimately help West End retailers compete with out-of-town locations.”

The Government announced the project will proceed last week, but details of funding have not yet been revealed.
