Consumer confidence suffered a setback in June after a big leap in May.
The feelgood factor accompanying April’s public holidays and the royal wedding proved short-lived as Gfk NOP’s Consumer Confidence Index recorded a four-point slide in June resulting in a headline figure of -25.
All the measurements used, including consumers’ confidence in their personal financial situation, the economic outlook and attitudes to big-ticket purchases, showed declines.
Gfk NOP social research managing director Nick Moon said: “It was almost inevitable that there would be a drop in confidence in June following last month’s unique feelgood circumstances.
“What will disappoint is that the drop is so large, wiping out half of last month’s gain and leaving consumer confidence lower than it was at any point in 2010.
“As we move into the summer, the outlook for the beleaguered high street remains gloomy.
