Burma Campaign issues threat to name and shame

Clothing retailers risk public humiliation by pressure group Burma Campaign UK if they continue to source from the country.

The lobbying organisation wrote to the chief executives of more than 100 UK fashion groups in September to urge them not to source from Burma.

However, only a quarter responded. While some said they were not aware they were sourcing from Burma, they provided no assurances that they would not do so in future.

Mark Farmaner, campaigns officer at Burma Campaign, said he will write again to retailers that had not responded and obtain records from Customs & Excise if necessary. He said that lists of 'clean', 'grey' and 'dirty' retailers will be compiled in April and public exposure might begin thereafter.

'We might organise boycotts but may stage shop-ins, too. This will be a major campaign and our main focus,' he said.
