B&Q rolls out 'makeover' CD-Rom

B&Q has launched a CD-Rom enabling customers to see before they buy how wallpaper, flooring and tiles will look in their homes.

The DIY giant claims that its Instant Makeover CD-Rom is an industry first and could be a big hit with consumers.

Instant Makeover features more than 1,000 B&Q products that shoppers can 'test' using digital photographs of rooms in their homes. Customers can then create a shopping list using the technology, before they purchase products in-store or online.

B&Q decided to launch the CD-Rom following a survey revealing that one in 10 Britons are still living with a bad decorating job undertaken more than five years ago, and that more than half (53 per cent) have at one time decorated their homes with disastrous results.

It also emerged that 60 per cent of Britons admit to making bad decisions when it comes to selecting paint colours.

B&Q director of marketing David Roth said: 'Although people love the idea of decorating their homes, a bad styling experience can destroy your confidence and, as the survey reveals, many people end up having to live with it. We hope the Instant Makeover CD-Rom will give people that extra insight.'

Competition among DIY retailers is intensifying, and they are searching for new ways of encouraging business from existing and new customers.
