Grocer turns up the heat in electricals
Asda has announced that it is slashing the price of flatscreen TVs to less than£230 for the first time. It has also confirmed it is introducing a recordable DVD player for less than£100 in a further expansion of its electricals range.

As reported in Retail Week last week, the company is introducing 20 products from Wal-Mart's entry price point Durabrand range. From this week, three flatscreen TVs will be available at Asda stores. The largest, a 26 inch dual LCD TV will cost£489.97, which is more than£200 cheaper than the equivalent TV on sale at Argos, according to Asda.

One in every four DVD players sold in the UK is now bought at Asda and the new products will add pressure on Dixons, which is due to announce its results on Wednesday.

Asda electrical general manager David Stewart said: 'We reckon our latest electrical range will send a shock wave through the industry. We're determined to ensure luxury items such as LCD widescreen TVs are made more affordable.'
