Argos (Overview)
Argos was acquired by Sainsbury’s from former owner Home Retail Group for £1.4bn in September 2016, as part of the grocer’s bid to strengthen its multichannel strategy. Sainsbury’s has been steaming ahead with Argos’ digital transformation. Ecommerce is an intrinsic part of the strategy, but the overriding aim at Argos is about creating a cohesive multichannel strategy. Its market-leading delivery and collection proposition is a big part of this – and was one of the main draws for Sainsbury’s, which was looking to expand its ecommerce credentials.

Sainsbury’s preliminary results for the 2023 financial year to 2 March 2024, revealed that its overall general merchandise sales were down 0.5% year on year, including the impact of the closure of Argos in the Republic of Ireland. Argos general merchandise sales also declined 0.5% year on year in FY2023. The Argos transformation programme remains on track and Sainsbury’s has said Argos is a “more profitable business”.

Argos is well-established as one of the UK’s leading ecommerce retailers. Sainsbury’s and Argos are clearly a good fit as the grocer strives to boost its multichannel credentials. By using excess space for concessions and collection points in Sainsbury’s supermarkets, it stands to reason that Argos’ standalone store network can be reduced with a significant reduction in operating costs.
