General merchandise retailer Argos has unveiled a 12-month delivery subscription scheme for customers.
Argos, owned by grocer Sainsbury’s, informed customers about the scheme today. Called Argos Plus, the retailer said it offers speed, ease and convenience.
“Early access” - the initiative is only available to selected customers at present - to Argos Plus costs £40. That entitles shoppers to same day, next day and standard delivery at no further cost on orders totalling £20 or more. It is unclear whether the price will rise once the early adoption period is over. The scheme does not include clothing or items delivered by a supplier.
An Argos spokesperson said: “As part of our More Argos, More Often strategy we regularly trial new ways to offer even better value and convenience to our customers. We’re inviting some customers to trial Argos Plus, a delivery pass available via Argos.co.uk, Habitat.co.uk and the Argos app.”
Argos standard delivery is normally £3.95, while same day delivery is £7.95. Small goods can be delivered free when a customer spends £100 or more.
Other retailers also offer annual delivery schemes. However often, as in the case of Morrisons and Tesco, cover frequent purchases such as groceries rather than general merchandise.
Sainsbury’s bought Argos in 2016. In the last few years the grocer has increasingly been focusing on its core food business. Earlier this year it emerged that a sale of Argos to Chinese JD.com had been considered.
After talks collapsed Sainsbury’s said it was ”committed to delivering the strongest and most successful future for Argos customers and colleagues” and that ”good progress” was being made on the transformation of Argos.
