Allied Carpets has been put up for sale by its French owner, which is seeking an exit from the struggling UK high street.

Tapis Saint-Maclou, which is controlled by the Mulliez family, has appointed Lazard to find a buyer for the£200 million flooring chain, according to the Financial Times.

Last year Allied Carpets, which is the UK’s second biggest carpet retailer, made an operating loss of£6.8 million on a turnover of£206.8 million.

Its main rival, Carpetright, last week issued a profit warning with its chairman Lord Harris citing the worst conditions he has seen in his 50 years of retailing.

Tapis Saint-Maclou paid£84.2 million to de-list Allied Carpets in 1999.
