Tesco is to open its first Harris + Hoole coffee shop in one of its stores after securing planning permission at its Tooley Street store in London Bridge.
Tesco boss Philip Clarke has said Harris + Hoole coffee shops would appear in Tesco stores “when the Tolleys are ready” but the grocer said there is currently “nothing in the pipeline at the moment” for future stores.
Harris + Hoole is 49% owned by Tesco with the remainder owned by Australian siblings Nick, Andrew and Laura Tolley.
The Tooley Street store is used to trial new concepts and the new format developed there in 2011 formed the basis of chief executive Philip Clarke’s plans to revive the in-store experience at the grocer.
Another Harris + Hoole site is set to open next door to Tesco Metro in Imperial Wharf, west London in property owned by Tesco, The Guardian reported.
A Tesco spokesman said: “As we’re refreshing the look and feel of our Tooley Street store, we think it’s a good opportunity to team up with Harris + Hoole and open a small coffee shop above the store.”
