Amazon has unveiled ambitions to bolster its research and development teams across the UK with 1,000 new roles and a new Manchester office.
The etail titan’s new Manchester corporate office will create at least 600 new roles and be focused on advancing the firm’s machine learning capabilities alongside other research and development work.
The 90,000 sq ft site will be located in the Hanover Building in the city’s Northern Quarter.
Alongside Amazon’s new Manchester offices, 250 and 180 new roles will be added to the retailer’s existing research and development centres in Edinburgh and Cambridge respectively.
New employees at the firm’s Edinburgh office will spearhead the development of its advertising and personalised shopping recommendation technology, while its new Cambridge roles will centre on advances in its own-brand devices such as Alexa as well as its drone delivery capabilities.
UK boss Doug Gurr said the new office and tech-focused roles are “Silicon Valley jobs in Britain, and further cement our long-term commitment to the UK.”
Secretary of state for international trade Liam Fox added: “Amazon’s decision to create hundreds of digitally skilled jobs in Manchester, Edinburgh and Cambridge is an enormous vote of confidence in the UK and a signal to the world that the UK is very much open for business.”
