John Lewis sales rose 11.4% last week driven by a “cracking” online performance.

Johnlewis.com recorded a 47% increase in sales in the week to January 21 with fashion sales up 71%, electrical and home technology up 48% and homewares up 34%.  

The website enjoyed a “stunning” performance on beds and Special Buy laptops.

John Lewis reported an increase in sales at 16 of its stores including Liverpool which was up 11%. Leicester rose 8.2% and Norwich improved by 6.1%.

Technology surged 90% as computer purchases doubled.

John Lewis director of selling operations in Region A Nat Wakely said: “Looking ahead, Valentine’s Day will be the next main calendar feature, although currently stocktaking is probably on more of our minds.”

Total sales at grocery arm Waitrose were 8.7% higher than last year as the colder edge to the weather drove demand for comfort and warming foods, such as ready meals, sales of which rose by 19%.

Chinese New Year was a significant factor in boosting sales of some other meats as customers cooked oriental dishes at home.

Waitrose supply chain director David Jones said sales of duck were up 71%, pork rose 21% and world beers increased by 30% as customer celebrated the Year of the Dragon.
