Tesco is moving forward with its Express store expansion plan following its acquisition of closed Amazon Fresh locations in London.

The retailer intends to launch over 70 additional Express convenience stores by March 2027, adding to the 60 opened during the previous year, according to The Times. Tesco runs more than 2,000 convenience locations throughout the UK and Ireland.

As revealed by Retail Week late last year, both Tesco and Sainsbury’s were in the running to snap up leases from the former Amazon Fresh convenience store estate, which closed at the end of September.

Five former Amazon Fresh stores, located on Kensington High Street, Hounslow, Moorgate, Aldgate East and Wembley, are now scheduled to relaunch as Tesco Express stores this year.

According to the report, additional Tesco Express stores are set to open across the UK including in Bickington in Devon and Pontrhydyrun in Torfaen, through to Strabane in County Tyrone and Wallyford in East Lothian.

The retailer is also expanding its larger store footprint. Following the opening of new superstores in Ripon and Harrogate toward the end of last year, the company has plans for two additional Scottish locations in 2026 – one in Pitlochry in Perth and Kinross, and another at the Heartlands development in West Lothian.

Tesco group property director Nick Johnson said the expansion would enable the retailer to serve “even more people, in even more communities”.
