Spar parent company Blakemore Retail has bought seven My Local stores after the ailing c-store chain fell into administration last month.

The convenience retailer, with 295 Spar stores nationwide, has acquired shops in Rhyl, Staffordshire, Cardiff, Chatham, Lambeth and two in Essex, just a fortnight after My Local went into administration, putting 1,658 jobs at risk.

Blakemore Retail managing director Geoff Hallam said: “I am confident the seven new stores will prove to be a fantastic addition to the business and I am delighted to welcome the staff and management teams.”

The acquisition comes the day after convenience retailer McColl’s agreed a deal to acquire 298 convenience stores from the Co-operative Group for £117m in cash. McColl’s chief executive Jonathan Miller branded the deal “transformational” for the group, which currently operates around 933 McColl’s-branded convenience stores in the UK.

Last week, the Co-op also snapped up six My Local stores in Croydon, Nottingham, Widnes, Blackpool, Stockport and Steeton.

My Local appointed KPMG to handle the administration of the 125 store chain following a period of tough trading.
