Marks & Spencer has hired former Morrisons executive Gordon Mowat as director for clothing and home supply chain, logistics and planning.

M&S said the newly created role will allow it to bring the supply chain and logistics functions for its non-food business closer together, as it bids to build an “efficient end-to-end supply chain.”

Mowat will join M&S in August, reporting in to the retailer’s new managing director of clothing and home, Jill McDonald.

Mowat spent just over four years at Morrisons, joining in January 2011 as group strategy director.

He went on to become managing director for convenience and later group property director, but left the grocer shortly after David Potts’ appointment as chief executive in March 2015.

Mowat, who has previously held senior roles at P&G and was a consultant at McKinsey, went on to serve as interim chief operations officer at Jack Wills for a year.

An M&S spokeswoman said: “Gordon brings extensive logistics, supply chain and wider strategic experience to the role, having held positions in retail and customer facing organisations.

“We’re delighted he is joining the business and his appointment supports our strategic priority for clothing and home and will ultimately help us deliver for our customers.”
