Ocado was founded by Tim Steiner, Jason Gissing and Jonathan Faiman in 2000, the business was built as an online grocer and benefited by being able to sell Waitrose products to its customers. Ocado floated in 2010. In 2019, Ocado struck a landmark £750m deal with Marks & Spencer to turn its retail business into a joint venture. Ocado has increasingly positioned itself as a technology company and sought to sell its services to international partners.

After mounting speculation that M&S would look to partner with Ocado to give it a viable way into online food, in February 2019 the two retailers announced a joint venture partnership, giving a much-needed boost to Ocado’s bottom line. While the joint venture prospered during the pandemic, M&S shareholders have become concerned after losses mounted in FY2022 as trading patterns normalised and shoppers returned to stores. A “reset” of the business is currently underway under Ocado Retail boss Hannah Gibson.
