George Dymond, the former Coles executive who was brought into Morrisons to oversee its online operation, has resigned just weeks after joining the grocer.

Dymond, who was group general manager of merchandise for Australian supermarket Coles, joined Morrisons in January but resigned at the weekend after the role failed to meet his expectations, reported the Financial Times.

Dymond, who was operations director at Morrisons, was recruited to help run its online grocery service, which it launched in partnership with Ocado two weeks ago.

Morrisons is understood to have been talking to Dymond about an alternative position.

Prior to joining Coles, Dymond was trading director of Carphone Warehouse for 10 years.

The departure comes after Morrisons reported like-for-likes fell 5.6% excluding petrol over the Christmas period which it put down to its lack of presence in online and convenience.

Last week, it emerged that Morrison had suspended its treasurer after he was arrested on suspicion of insider dealing before the supermarket’s deal with Ocado was revealed.
