A Marks & Spencer store in London was closed and its staff were treated in hospital following a carbon monoxide leak.

The Charlton branch of M&S has been temporarily closed after 30 of its staff were seen by paramedics for chemical inhalation on Tuesday (December 16), with 11 being taken to hospital for further treatment.

It’s understood that the store had yet to open to the public. No customers were affected by the leak, which set off carbon monoxide alarms shortly before the shop was set to open.

Six staff members are undergoing further tests in hospitals, with no injuries thought to be life-threatening.

The London Fire Brigade carried out a sweep of the building and confirmed the elevated readings of carbon monoxide.

London Ambulance Service strategic commander James Johnson said: “We were called at 9.32am today to reports of an incident on Gallions Road, Charlton.

“We have sent a number of resources to the scene, including both conventional ambulance resources, specialist assets such as our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and Advanced Paramedic Practitioners.”

An M&S spokesperson said: “Our Charlton store is temporarily closed as we investigate an incident that happened earlier this morning. We hope to reopen as soon as possible.”
