Convenience store chain McColl’s has teamed up with Deliveroo to offer home delivery of its goods to give vulnerable customers access to daily essentials.

McColl’s said a “wide range of essential goods” would be made available on the Deliveroo app including groceries, soft drinks, confectionery, snacks, beer, wine, toiletries and household goods.

Deliveries will initially be made from more than 120 McColl’s stores, which will expand to over 300 stores across the country.

Deliveries will be placed through the app and fulfilled by Deliveroo’s rider network “within 30 minutes” and all deliveries will be contact-free, ensuring the safety of consumers.

McColl’s said the partnership “will help customers, particularly the elderly and vulnerable in isolation and unable to leave their homes, to access the food and toiletries they need” during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

McColl’s chief executive Johnathan Miller said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Deliveroo at this important time. We want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to get their daily essentials as they stay at home.

“The partnership allows us to further our support of the neighbourhood communities we serve, providing the option of home delivery for a wide range of quality goods from our stores across the country.”

Deliveroo, and food delivery apps more generally such as Uber Eats and Just Eat, have become increasingly active in the grocery and c-store space over the last few years.

The Co-op launched a delivery trial with Deliveroo in January 2018, while Costcutter partnered with Uber Eats in late 2019.

Last month, Deliveroo and Marks & Spencer announced a delivery partnership to meet the demands of shoppers social distancing as a result of coronavirus.
