Asda has today announced the interim appointment of Barney Burgess as vice president of online, as it waits for David Devany to join the business later in 2025.

Burgess brings over 25 years expertise working in retail, consumer and financial services both internationally and in the UK.
He most recently spent five years running Tesco’s grocery home shopping business, during which time Burgess helped launch the supermarket giant’s click & collect service for grocery orders.
He also previously worked with consultancy firm McKinsey, where Burgess advised online grocery businesses on their operational strategies.
Burgess will lead Asda.com, George.com and online operations teams with immediate effect, reporting into the retailer’s chief digital officer Matt Kelleher.
He will remain in place until David Devany joins the business from Iceland in 2025 and becomes the permanent vice president of online.
The announcement comes after it was reported that Asda was considering making more job cuts, having confirmed it had made nearly 500 staff redundant at the business last week.
The job cuts have left the GMB union considering filing discrimination claims against Asda, mainly on behalf of women who have been let go while on maternity leave.
“This is not the right way for one of the UK’s largest private sector employers to handle job cuts of this scale,” the union told The Telegraph over the weekend.
