The proposed regeneration of Derby city centre has cleared one of the final hurdles with Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott’s decision to approve the compulsory purchase and road closure orders that are needed to complete the site assembly.
Prescott’s decision clears the way for Westfield and Hermes’ £200 million extension of The Eagle Centre. The developers want to extend the mall to 1 million sq ft (97,400 sq m).
The redevelopment will introduce more than 100 stores in two new arcades integrated into the existing Eagle Centre. Two department stores fronting Traffic Street will anchor each arcade.
The expanded centre will also feature 2,000 new parking spaces, bringing the total to 3,750.
Westfield director of development Peter Miller said the scheme would herald a new era for shopping and leisure in Derby.
‘The development will provide a huge lift to Derby’s southern gateway, creating a flagship entrance to the city from the inner ring road,’ he said.
According to Miller, construction is expected to start later this year, with completion projected for 2007.
