WHSmith has reported solid revenue growth as its North American travel business continues to outperform other international markets
The travel retailer reported a 5% increase in group revenue for the 26 weeks to 28 February 2026, primarily driven by a strong international travel retail performance.
WHSmithâs stores in North America were the standout during the reporting period, with total revenue up 10% in constant currency terms.
The Travel Essentials business was a strong performer, with revenue up 22% on a constant currency basis and like-for-like sales up 6%, fuelled by new store openings and higher passenger spending. Within its airport stores sales were up 15%. The InMotion tech accessories business continued to lag, however, with revenue down 1% and like-for-like sales down 4%, and the retailer told markets that a portfolio review was ongoing.
The group also closed three fashion stores in its Resorts business amid falling Las Vegas visitor numbers.
In the UK, total and like-for-like revenue both grew 2%. Hospitals were a bright spot with total revenue up 7%, while rail edged up 1% in total but saw like-for-like sales dip 2%. Temporary closures across all Heathrow terminals weighed on its airports business, though the retailer said its refurbished flagship stores are expected to re-open in April.
Rest of World revenue rose 8% in constant currency, supported by new store annualisation, though the group said it would continue to exit sub-scale markets, including the recent closure of four stores at DĂźsseldorf Airport.
Although the business reported that it was on-track to meet its full-year guidance, it flagged disruption in the Middle East, announcing to markets: âLooking ahead, we are mindful of the geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East and the impact that this is having on passenger numbers across our key markets.
âWe will continue to monitor the situation and focus on what we can control, including executing against our clear strategic priorities and strengthening our focus on cost and cash discipline.â
