Hobbycraft has posted a “strong” uplift in festive sales driven by online growth and demand for recyclable products.

The crafts specialist posted an 8.9% rise in sales year on year in the five weeks to December 24, up 5.3% in like-for-like terms.

Store like-for-like sales rose 3% during the period, while onlines sales rose 19.5% as the retailer “saw significant growth in the number of customers choosing to use more recyclable products over the festive period, including gift wrap, gift tags and DIY crackers”.

The retailer held a series of festive workshops across its 99-strong store estate in the run-up to Christmas with activities ranging from making fillable baubles to creating handmade crackers, which were attended by more than 23,000 shoppers.

Chief executive Dominic Jordan said: “This is a good performance. This Christmas we’ve seen so many customers looking not only to personalise their gifts, but also to consider presentation and recyclability of materials. We’ve seen some fantastic examples of gift-wrapping and tags, which can be both beautiful and better for the environment.”
