JJB Sports has appointed former Safeway director Lawrence Christensen CBE as non-executive director.

Christensen, who was also supply chain director and managing director of convenience at Sainsburys, will take up the role on November 1 following a consultancy project with Australian retailer Coles.

JJB Sports chairman Mike McTighe said: “Lawrence’s operational knowledge, as well as his experience as a director at other retail companies will be warmly welcomed at JJB.”

The struggling sportswear retailer this month appointed Richard Bernstein, director at one of its largest shareholders Crystal Amber, to its board.

The retailer - which secured a second company voluntary arrangement in March, allowing it to exit 43 loss-making stores over the next year - is set to unveil its preliminary results next Wednesday.
