Mondays were the biggest day for online shopping in 2017, while numbers were at their lowest over the weekend, according to PCA Predict.

Findings from ecommerce data expert PCA Predict have revealed that on average in 2017 Mondays generated the biggest ecommerce traffic in the UK.

Data showed that 15.3% of all mobile and desktop ecommerce traffic throughout the week took place on Mondays.

Consumers were also found to be least likely to shop over the weekend, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday clocking up the lowest number of people browsing ecommerce websites.

“Retail never sleeps now. Consumers have complete control when deciding when and how they want to shop online”

The lowest volume of ecommerce traffic, on average, was on Saturdays, which notched up just 12.3% of the week’s total number of visitors to retailers’ websites.

This trend may reflect UK consumers’ propensity to visit bricks-and-mortar stores at the weekends.

PCA Predict data also found that the highest volume of traffic experienced on Mondays was between 11am and 3pm when, on average, 27% of the day’s consumers were browsing.

Meanwhile, 1pm was found to be the peak time during daylight hours with 6.8% of consumers shopping online at that time.
Traffic also peaked again at 8pm when 6.9% of daily purchases took place.

PCA Predict head of marketing Chris Boaz said: “As PCA Predict’s data shows, retail never sleeps now. Consumers have complete control when deciding when and how they want to shop online.

“Due to this, retailers are presented with significant challenges, the biggest of which is meeting their customers’ heightened expectations, regardless of the time or day.

“Failure to meet these heightened expectations means you might miss out on a crucial sale. Given how competitive ecommerce now is, no retailer can afford this.”
