Consumer confidence has risen by two points to -17 since November, according to GfK’s consumer confidence index, as overall results show stagnation from last year.

All five measures were up from last month, with notable increases in the global economic situation and the major purchase index, which rose by three and four points, respectively.

Personal financial situation hindsight and foresight both increased by one point to -6 and +2, respectively.

The savings index remains unchanged from November but is up three points to 24 compared with this time last year.

GfK consumer insights director Neil Bellamy said: “The December headline score of -17 is the same as 12 months ago, and on that basis, 2025 has been a year of no progress.

“UK households still face cost-of-living pressures, despite the recent softening of inflation, along with rising economic uncertainty, and those conditions result in weaker consumer confidence.”

Bellamy also said that the December increase contrasts with the slowdown in post-Black Friday sales.
